Catalina island is a favorite destination for a weekend getaway. One such weekend was during the California wild fires. The sky was thick with smoke—even as far away as Catalina— which produced a powerful orange glow as the sun tried to shine through. The orange light perfectly illuminated the many Bird of Paradise plants found throughout the island and enhanced their brilliant warm colors. In this painting, the soft warm light is a bittersweet reminder of both the beauty and the delicacy of our surroundings.
