The Breakers

Capturing the cool light of the Eastern seaboard, The Breakers is named after the infamous Vanderbuilt “cottage” in front of which I found these Oriental Lilies. I was struck by their luminous light and bright, yet cool colors which so accurately captured the feel of the day. What I love about this painting are its three distinct planes—the extreme foreground with the lilies captured in detail followed by the immediate background of Japanese Maple which is somewhat out of focus, and the blurred extreme background of Cypress trees lining the bluffs of Cliff Walk. The combination of the three planes and their cooresponding transition of bright to dull colors give this painting a wonderful sense of depth..
