The stark contrasts of lush tropical foliage juxtaposed against miles of rigid black lava flows make the “Kona Side” of the big island one of my favorite places on the planet. One of the resorts I visited had such an amazing landscape design with huge assortment of multi-colored hibiscus, that I just had to paint them. In “On the Kona Side” I wanted to capture the intense richness of Hawaii by condensing a bouquet of hibiscus into an over-sized, perfectly square design. This painting became the flagship of the whole garden series, and remains one of my favorites.
